Movement as Medicine: How Releasing Trauma Heals Body, Mind, and Spirit

Updated: Oct 21, 2025

Have you ever finished a workout you dreaded, only to notice you felt lighter—as if you left more than just sweat behind? What if movement could be about more than calories burned or muscles strengthened? Could it be a way to release old emotions, lift your spirits, and even heal your mind?

For me, working out has always felt deeper than just moving the physical body. Early in my career, I sensed there was a connection between body, mind, spirit, and emotions—but it’s taken over two decades of hands-on coaching and personal practice to not just understand this on an intellectual level, but to actually embody it in daily life.

I’ve come to see that even resistance training—which is what most people know personal trainers for—can become a spiritual practice, a way to heal and grow, not just physically but mentally and emotionally. The simple act of lifting, pressing, or stretching isn’t just about muscles and joints; it’s about moving energy, shifting emotional states, and sometimes even letting go of experiences or stress ‘stuck’ in our bodies.

To me, this is why personal training is truly spiritual work. We rarely see trainers described this way, and not every coach views movement through this lens—but I do. After all, life is about perspective, and mine has been shaped by witnessing hundreds of individuals transform—not just their bodies, but their outlook and energy—through consistent, mindful movement. Whether it’s yoga or deadlifts, Tai Chi or bench press, when we intentionally move our bodies, we move our energy too, and that changes everything.

Trauma and Maturity: The Secret Story Hidden in Words

Etymology unlocks insight:

Etymology Highlight

Exercise (Latin: exercitium, “to drive out by practice”)

Exorcise (from exorcizare, “to expel spirits”)

Expire/Spirit (from spirare, “to breathe, blow”)

How Trauma Gets Trapped, and How Movement Sets It Free

Science is finally catching up to what healers have known for millennia: trauma isn’t just a mental loop; it’s a physical imprint. When we experience distress, acute or chronic, our bodies shift into survival mode (fight, flight, freeze). If that danger passes but the tension never fully releases, it sticks around. Muscle stiffness, shallow breath, aches, and even persistent sadness often are trauma.

Research shows that trauma is actually stored in the nervous system and the body’s tissues. One study in Frontiers in Neuroscience describes the “brain-body disconnect” seen after trauma, where the body holds onto pain the mind hasn’t acknowledged (Kearney & Lanius, 2022).

Why Can’t We Just Talk It Out?

Talk therapy is powerful, but words can only reach so far. The body’s memory is pre-verbal; it’s held in posture, breath, and movement patterns. Studies on trauma therapies, including somatic experiencing and movement-based modalities, show that healing stuck trauma requires integrated, embodied approaches (Crane-Godreau, 2015).

Movement as Exorcism: Science Meets Spirit

When we move, really move with intention, we invite our bodies to finish the stories that trauma started. Through stretching, sweating, and feeling our own breath, we facilitate a natural exorcism:

  • Toxins are released via sweat and exhale

  • Stuck energy is moved as we flex, twist, and shake

  • Old emotions finally get a pathway out

Dance therapists and somatic practitioners agree: structured movement like stretching or rhythmic dance enables the release of trauma the same way an “exorcism” aims to expel what doesn’t belong. A 2023 meta-analysis found that body- and movement-based interventions significantly reduce PTSD symptoms(van de Kamp et al., 2023).

Research Highlight

Studies show Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) produce measurable reductions in trauma-related symptoms, even after just eight weeks (2024 study).

The Breath: Your Personal Exorcism Tool

Breath is magic. It’s spirit. Every long, deep inhale brings in life (prana); every exhale, expire, lets go of what’s old or toxic.

Try This: Conscious Breathwork Ritual

  1. Find a quiet place. Stand, sit, or lie down comfortably.

  2. Close your eyes. Place one hand on your belly, one on your heart.

  3. Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of 4. Feel your belly expand.

  4. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6-8. Imagine old worries, pain, or limiting stories leaving with your breath.

  5. Repeat for 2-5 minutes.

Notice sensations, tingling, warmth, emotion. That’s energy moving, trauma releasing. This is basic, accessible, and incredibly potent. You don’t need anything fancy; your body and breath know exactly what to do.

From Stuck to Spirited: The Healing Power of Stretching

When trauma lodges in the body, it often manifests as tightness, shoulders creeping up, hips glued, lower back stiff. Stretching is an act of self-liberation. As you open these spaces, you create room for energy and spirit to flow.

Try This: Gentle Stretch Flow for Release

  1. Neck rolls: Softly circle your neck, letting go of tension in the jaw and upper back.

  2. Shoulder shrugs: Lift your shoulders to your ears, then drop with a big exhale, letting heaviness go.

  3. Spinal twist: Seated or standing, gently rotate left and right. Imagine “wringing out” old emotions.

  4. Forward fold: Bend at the hips, letting arms dangle. Release the head and breathe deeply, imagine stress pouring out your spine.

  5. Hip opener: Lie on your back, cross one ankle over the opposite knee and pull in gently. Hips often hold grief; breathe into tight spots.

Do these slowly. Each inhalation invites new energy; each exhale is another expiration of what no longer belongs.

Why This Work Is Sacred

I take this work seriously because healing isn’t just physical; it's spiritual and emotional alchemy. Just as ancient alchemists sought to turn lead into gold, movement lets us transmute pain into wisdom. Every time you move, stretch, or breathe with intention, you’re becoming more whole (and “whole” shares the same root as “heal”).

In my practice, I see people “grow up” emotionally, often for the first time, simply by reclaiming lost movement. Our traumas keep us stuck, emotionally and physically, in a kind of arrested development. We can’t mature beyond them until we move them through and (yes) out.

The Science Backs It Up, but Your Body Proves It First

Do we need research to prove this? The answer is yes: and no. Scientific meta-analyses confirm that movement-based therapies reduce trauma symptoms, depression, and anxiety(van de Kamp, 2023). Neuroscience shows movement increases neuroplasticity, regulates the nervous system, and restores a sense of agency. But ultimately, your body is the best laboratory:

  • Move: not as punishment, but as an experiment, as a ritual.

  • Notice what shifts. Where do you feel lighter, brighter, more “inspired”?

  • Your experience is your expertise. Listen to it.

Movement Is Medicine: And Ritual

We’re not machines. We’re living rituals: walking, breathing, feeling bundles of spirit. When we move with intention, we reclaim more than fitness:

  • We exorcise what weighs us down.

  • We expire the old, making way for the new.

  • We mature, growing into our bodies (and our lives) more fully.

So today, I invite you:

Move with reverence. Stretch for freedom. Breathe for life. You don’t need perfect form; just a willingness to listen.

If you want guidance or a place to start, I’m here. Book a session, or simply reflect: What movement is calling you today? Move until your body feels lighter, your breath flows freer, and your spirit lifts.

We are all energetic beings. Your movement is your medicine. Make it your ritual.
